I kicked off my 4th off with a bang by heading out to the Firebrook neighborhood of West Lexington to check out their festivities. Firebrook is a well established neighborhood tucked into the side pocket off Harrodsburg Road and Military Pike with lush landscaping & a cool community vibe the minute you turn in. I was excited to see what the day held for me.
I arrived by 1:30 pm to the main clubhouse parking lot to be greeted by a mass of children zipping around on their bikes (decorated of course) in traditional red, white & blue. Standing nearby on guard were two uniformed officers on handsome steeds from the Lexington Police Department. How fun; a bike parade for the kids to be led by the mounted horse patrol from downtown! It was wonderful to watch my daughter get into the action and zoom away happily to join the bikers lineup. Several moms carried the Firebrook swim banner and off they went, weaving through the streets as parents stood on the sidewalks and waved and cheered.
The day continued to move by swiftly with orchestrated activities like the dedication of a brand new playground in front of the clubhouse, free ice cream to everyone checking out the newest addition of family entertainment. The afternoon continued to wind up with a kids’ fishing tournament in the front lake of the neighborhood. The ducks and geese seemed happy to have so much company lakeside as the water fountain feature blasted streams high into the late afternoon sun.
The poolside vibe was incredible as the community had brought in a guitar/keyboardist who played into the night with a set of oldies from Buffet, James Taylor, and classics every parent over 35 could appreciate and groove too as the kids swam & splashed in the waning sun.
Finally nightfall made its way to the lakefront audience and a powerful display of fireworks oohed & awed not only the neighborhood (EVERYONE turned out) but also many traffic stoppers pulled over on Harrodsburg Road to take in the pyrotechnics. The dads of Firebrook band together every year to provide the sparkle, pop & bang of a dynamite fireworks show; this year was no exception with a professional pyro team leading the way.
If you are looking for a true ‘community neighborhood’ for your family, one where neighbors gather regularly and interact and watch out for one another – Firebrook just may be the next place to call HOME.
The average household size is 3.0 with the average family at 3.2 and a total number of homes at a manageable 400, this neighborhood rates a 10 on my scale of quality of life.
