For Sellers

• Advertise. Advertise on several platforms and early in the week. You may even place ads the week before your big sale. The more serious yard sale shoppers, the ones you know are looking to buy, will be planning their Saturday well in advance, so you want to be sure you’re on their radar early! On the day of your sale, place some signs around the neighborhood and even balloons to guide shoppers to your location. Be sure it’s attention-grabbing and that it can be read from afar.

• Get cash and coins. Don’t forget this one! Since this is a cash-only game, you’ll want to be sure you have plenty of small bills and quarters for people carrying larger bills. If they can’t get their change back, they’ll probably just walk away! (Never accept checks, BTW! You’d hate to have it bounce after the person is long gone!)

• Create a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely don’t be have a creepy-looking yard sale. Have most of your items out in the driveway. If you have to use the garage, be sure it’s not too dark and shady looking. If your shoppers of weary of entering the space, they can’t buy your stuff! You might also play background music to create a fun mood, or even put down rugs to give your “shop” a cool vibe. If the shoppers are drawn in and want to stay longer, chances are, they’ll buy more stuff!

• Display your items well. Make it look good. Be organized. Have plenty of tables, and display simlar items together. Also, if you arrange by price, you won’t have to label each individual item. For example, have a $5 table, a $1 table, etc. For clothes, a good idea is to do a $5 or $10 bag–anything they stuff in a bag you give them they can buy for that amount. Use baskets and buckets to hold lots of small or loose items. Especially if you’re trying to sell the basket, it will demonstrate how useful it is! Also, items like fold up chairs should be opened up to show what they really look like and so shoppers can try them out.

• Be willing to negotiate! After all, the reason you’re having the yard sale in the first place is most likely because you have a bunch of stuff you want to get rid of, right? Every item that walks off your driveway is a major score for you. Whether you made an extra buck from it or not, it’s out of your hair. Besides, it’s worth something to know that your item is now bringing joy to someone else rather than being tossed into storage!
